In addition to Israel's immediate and effective response to the Haiti earthquake, Israelis have been at the front line in other disaster situations around the world:
- Kenya 1998: When the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya was bombed in 1998, Israeli rescue teams were on the scene within a day - and saved three victims from the rubble.
- India 2001: When an earthquake struck India in January 2001, Israel sent an entire field hospital.
- Iraq: Iraqi children suffering severe burns are treated in Israel.
- Gaza: Palestinians, including many children are treated in Israeli hospitals.
The IDF sent an aid delegation of over 220 search and rescue and medical personnel to assist in the rescue efforts following the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Search and rescue teams are working around the clock to extract victims trapped in the rubble and the IDF has constructed a field hospital capable of treating up to 500 people a day near the soccer field in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Haiti Day 6 - No one but the Israeli's have come to help any of our patients that are dying
January 18, 2010: CNN Elizabeth Cohen interviews makeshift medical tent personnel.
Asking Harvard Medical Dr. Jennifer Furin, "Have the American's set up a field hosptial?"
"Currently, not yet."
Cohen: "The Israeli's came from the other side of the world..."
Furin: "It's a frustrating thing that I really can't explain..."
